This race is a favo(U)rite for our team and we are excited to go back this year. It is the largest dragon boat race in North America, with teams competing from all over the world. It is a great opportunity to meet paddlers from other teams, exchange jerseys and get to know your teammates even better.
Hapkido USA of San Francisco is offering Ripple Effect members another free self-defense class! In this session, Jerry will be teaching students how to defend themselves against attackers and escape threatening situations. He will dressed in a full-body, padded suit to take punches and kicks from students. We are also in need of volunteers to pretend to be attackers by holding punching bags.
Everyone’s favorite fundraiser is back! Where else can you grab some drinks from our Ripple Effect guest bartenders and raise money for our team? Everyone 21+ is welcome so invite your friends, coworkers, family, and teammates. The more the merrier! There will also be a raffle with awesome prizes and we’ll be revealing our Ripple guest bartenders soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Did you paddle on a Corporate Team at Lake Merritt or Treasure Island and want to see what it's like on an adult team? Have your friends starting turning in early on weekend nights because they have to get up early to go Lake Merced and you want to see what all the fuss is about? Do you think dragon boat is the same as crew and you can't understand why your coworker sighs loudly whenever you ask her/him about "rowing"?
Well, you're in luck! We're hosting a special day dedicated to brand new and novice paddlers, to give them a chance to get some (or some more) dragon boat experience. We'll hold this during our regularly scheduled practice, so we should be able to have a newbie boat practicing alongside our veteran boat, focusing on technique and the fundamentals and then maybe we'll swap people around for some fun paddling activities.
10:00AM - 10:30AM: Welcome and stretching
10:30AM - 12:00PM: Practice on the water
12:00PM - 12:15PM: Debrief
12:30 PM onward: Optional lunch with the team! (We'll pick a spot nearby.)
Here's a checklist of things to keep in mind for practice:
- Make sure to wear clothes that you won't be uncomfortable in if they get wet (usually dry fit athletic gear is good)
- Bring a change of clothing for after
- In terms of shoes, most people wear flip-flops or water shoes. You can also go barefoot. It's up to you, but your feet will get wet
- Bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated throughout practice
- Eat breakfast or something light before you come
- Have fun
New location, new name. The race has moved from Treasure Island to Lake Merritt in Oakland, but that doesn't change anything. It is one of the biggest dragon boat festival is the United States, attracting teams from all over to compete. This is the last race of the season for us so it's time to show off all the hard work you've put into this sport.
Long Beach will be our official away race. When else do you get to lounge on the beach while watching dragon boat races that are mere feet away AND get to hang with some of the coolest paddlers around: our sister team, Space Dragons! Not to mention we haven't been to this location in a few years, so it's an extra-special treat.
MedShare.org is a non-profit that managed to supply/send 137 ship containers of life-saving medical supplies and equipment to 28 countries, provisioned 353 medical missions teams and 103 U.S. clinics in 2015. Whether for maternal/child health, disaster relief, or infection and disease control, this non-profit has been there to help, and so can we.
An additional away race we added because we had so many people interested in paddling at the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival. This is a popular race since it's international, but not too far from home. With many places to see, things to do, and especially food to eat, it's not hard to see why it is so popular. Gotta get that Japadog.
We are back with everyone's favorite fundraiser! When else can you go grab a drink with friends and help them raise money? Invite your friends, coworkers, family, and teammates...the more the merrier! (21+ only please)
Grab a drink (or three) from one of our Ripple Effect guest bartenders! Be kind and tip generously! All tips from the main bar (where our Ripple bartenders will be serving you) go back to Ripple, including both cash and credit card tips.
Our host venue has two floors (including some arcade games upstairs), plenty of seating, and also serves food!

This month's Thirsty Thursday event will be a mixer with our fellow Bay Area dragon boat team, Bay Area Dragons. Come out and meet new paddlers, mingle, have a few drinks, and check out this new tiki hot spot that opened earlier this year!
Our first local race of 2016 is on the horizon and it's time to start planning and getting pumped up!
This is a one-day race and we will have entries in the Mixed, Open and Women divisions. We will be racing against most of the dragon boat teams in the Bay Area, so we're in for some fun competition.
